All is fair in war and reality TV romance. Almost.
VH1's 2006 smash hit "Flavor of Love" introduced viewers to a world where booze-swilling, booty-shaking, bitch-slapping women elbowed their way into the love life of Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav.
The show's latest spinoff, "Rock of Love" - with Poison front man Bret Michaels - features more slobbering, scheming, stripping and screaming than ever before.
But even in the spicy society of VH1, it is possible for a girl to be too bad. Producers Cris Abrego and Mark Cronin of 51 Minds Entertainment admit that attention-grabbing antics can ultimately hurt a contestant's chances.
"There's a lot of ways you can go too far," says Abrego, "even with our better bad girls."
Seasons of the franchise have given us love-to-hate spitfire singles such as Tiffany (New York) Pollard and "Rock of Love's" devilish Lacey Conner. But while these women fascinate their respective celebrity bachelors, the best players know when to dial back their behavior.

NUDITY
The second season of "Flavor of Love" - once Flav had been spurned by the winner of Season One - brought professional stripper Leilene (Smiley) Ondrade to the house. "Thank God for VH1 for having some stripper love," says Ondrade. "They could make Ron Jeremy and I look like a saint and an angel." But when fellow contestant and resident drunk Jennifer (Toasteee) Toof was revealed to have dabbled in pornography, a line was drawn. "She had some nude photos and we didn't know about it so we had to find it and play it out," says Abrego. Cautions Ondrade: "They will Google the hell out of you."
SEX
Getting cozy with the object of your affection will snag air time. "You do what you think is going to make the producers keep the camera on you," says Quanda Williamson of flavoroflove.blogspot.com. "That might be [Season One's] Pumkin and Hoopz taking a shower with Flav and making out." But beware too much, er, freedom of expression. Specifically off limits: lesbian leanings and having appeared on other dating television shows - both of which spoil the fun for the bachelor du jour.
SELF-PROMOTION
The celeb bachelors are wary of any girl who is more interested in the camera than the date. Expressing your wish to be a singer, model or actress shows healthy ambition, but trying to claw your way into a career doesn't jive. When Heather (Krazy) Crawford wouldn't stop her song and dance about a recording career on "Flavor of Love 2," she had to shimmy her way out the door. "Krazy murdered herself," says Williamson. "She took it overboard because she didn't have the greatest voice - please keep it to the shower."
MOMMY DUTY
This isn't "The Bachelor," and a couple of kids aren't going to freak out the boyfriend material. Flav has sired seven kids and Michaels two. But a weepy obsession with family life got Cindy (Rodeo) Steedle booted from "Rock of Love." "In Rodeo's case, we brought up the idea of 'Why are you even here?'" says Cronin. " 'Why are you on a reality show if you're worried about your kids back home?' We're not afraid to hit that kind of stuff head on."
FIGHTING
"Violence is obviously something that's never tolerated on any of our sets," says Abrego. Indeed, the rule of the shows is that if you slap or punch a contestant, you get expelled - like the feisty Saaphyri Windsor from "Flavor of Love 2," who beat up Renee (H-Town) Austin over her choice of bedroom. Catfights, however, are encouraged.
FAKENESS
The cardinal sin on reality TV is being, well, not real. "If you get caught lying, you get kicked off the show," says Williamson. "If you get caught." Indeed, uncovering the girls' dirty secrets - such as hidden boyfriends back home - is a central device. "It is a great story line to follow, and a producer will never lose when you're uncovering the truth," says Abrego. "No matter how many times you see it, it's always great. And people continue to come on these shows and lie."
However, any contestant who can scheme without straying into fiction is playing to win. Flav's nastiest lady love, New York (Pollard), made an art out of alienating her peers and watching them crumble. "She was rewarded for being conniving, two-faced and highly sexual," says Williamson. "And she's not that attractive." Likewise, Conner on "Rock of Love" openly plans to pick off the other girls one by one according to their weaknesses. "Lacey is a captain in terms of bad girls," says Abrego. "She led us through all plotting and sneaking and we followed along."
In the end, the baddest of girls may do themselves in, but along the way they are the ultimate challenge for the celebrity dater. Or, as Flavor Flav told us in an e-mail, "A girl can always be too crazy and too spicy! But your man Flav can handle it. I just put a little butter on that jalapeño and rinse it down with a cold one!"
